• Hot On The Tracks

    The winter chill continues as February winds down but at the harness tracks of North America we remain fiery with winter winners and red-hot contenders. Riding that wave, we go into the final week of February with more great expectations for the horses-to-watch list (H2W, this week adding Lebanon Raceway) and some seasonal series finals at the New Meadowlands.

    As well, once again, TwinSpires pays 10-percent bonuses on winning Pick 4s at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday nights and Woodbine on Saturday night.

    We included a bonus blog this week for the Feb. 20 Buffalo Pick 4, as the exotic takes place between our scheduled blogs. The bad news is that some of our longer shots were in the mix but did not win any leg (the only H2W we suggested, Quiet Judy, was second at 23-1). The good news is the Pick 4 winners were chalk-laden and the pay out was only $55 ($60 with the 10-percent bonus).

    We include in this blog our suggestions for Saturday’s Woodine Pick-4 events, all of which we hope will help you cash a larger exotic than would result from dead-on public choices.  See below the H2W lists.

    Four finals adorn the Feb. 23 program at the New Meadowlands and here are our evaluations.

    Finales

    This Saturday features three stakes finals at the New Meadowlands. The Charles Singer Memorial, Exit 16W and Winter Survivor series headline the card.  

    First up is the “Singer.” On paper this race looks wide open but there is a horse that shows promise in this field and could provide value. Volare De Vie is coming off a win in the Singer series from post 10, where he gunned for the lead and came back to win at 33-1. He’ll likely launch off the gate tonight and will be a fierce menace of the pace, having to tussle with Real Babe and Where To Hanover but he should emerge victorious.  

    The Exit 16W is yet another showcase this year in an attempt to beat superstar four-year-old Holdingallthecards. We’ll try this week again with Yo Cheyenne Rocky. He made a move at three-quarters and kicked home just to finish second by a nose to Holdingallthecards. Yo Cheyenne Rocky will likely be placed near the top and will try to make a move like he did last week.  

    We’re also watching Hang Ten. In case a scenario emerges where the race opens up for a closer, Hang Ten can kick home from far back. He was shuffled to last and closed ground late in the stretch to win at 32-1. He gets post relief tonight and should be placed around mid-pack and have an easier time closing if a fast pace develops up front.

    Finally, the Winter Survivor Series looks to be the value race of the night. Dreamzzzz R For U and Cambassador are our bargain choices in this event. Dreamzzzz R For U is coming off a parked mile with cover where he closed late to finish second. He’ll likely be in the same spot this week but should be more aggressive. Cambassador is another horse that comes from off the pace. In his last start he got away mid-pack, rode cover, moved three wide at three-quarters and held off a late bid from Get It Now. Cambassador may be further off the pace this week but should ride cover in the $86,700 final.

    H2W Legend


    Always review the H2W legend, published weekly, to authenticate the choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track to decide how you will use the information.

    Before the horses’ names is the track, followed on the next paragraph by a date it (or they) will be racing, with the race in which they are entered (R and race number). If a + is in front of a horse’s name, it means that horse is appearing on the list for the second (and last time) because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” means the horse is on the also-eligible list and needs a scratch to get into the race. Sometimes up to three horses are listed in the same race; it is up to you how to deal with the situation (note that in the past this situation has resulted in exacta and triples).  

    If a horse that has appeared on the list but was scratched or is not racing its second week consecutively, you will see a N/R after its name and will appear on a separate line from dated entries. And if a horse shows up at another track in its second week of being listed, it will display the plus sign as indicated above.  

    There is a margin of error, of course, so we encourage you to keep your own list along with our list to be sure our H2W is free of mistakes.  

    All members of the list need to be considered serious contenders in the races noted. Wagering on any of them is based on your own judgment of value, as well as if you wager to win, place, show or in exotics.
