Cotolo’s Harness Review, News And Notes

The Levy legs at Yonkers on Saturday, March 30 testified to our success in this series over the years as our choices bombarded the toteboard. Four of the five divisions were spot on target in our blog’s coverage last Thursday.

Best of the bunch were the second and fifth legs. Electrofire and Forever Just, our two choices, combined for a great score. The former won and paid $11, while the latter came in second, a teaming that produced an exacta worth $48.80. The fifth leg resulted in a win for Casimir Jitterbug with a $26 mutuel over the popular favorite Foiled Again.

Our other two winners were no surprise to anyone. Rockincam was in a dead heat for the win in the first leg, paying $2.10 and Something For Doc won the third division at $2.50. Our only loss could have been due to a break, as Bet On The Law was surging for top contention when he broke and finished eighth.

On Friday, March 29 at Yonkers, only Royal Cee Cee N came through for us in the Matchmaker legs and she shared that win to pay only $2.30. We has a close call as Feeling You finished second at 30-1 in the fifth leg.

Our horses-to-watch (H2W) list had more leftovers from last week than new suggested contenders but there was a good rate of winners. Here are the results of all the wins, places and shows from this extraordinary list.

H2W

Here they are from the highest paying to the lowest paying winners from the H2W for March to date:

$36.80 Sign Of The Moment, Freehold
$17.60 Artability, Cal Expo
$7.20 My Best Man, Freehold
$7.00 Ge’s Jody, Freehold
$6.40 Boot Scootin Bow, Cal Expo
$3.50 This American Life, Fraser

The following are the horses that finished second or third along with their post-time odds. Special notes on those finishes follow (where two sets of odds appear it reflects two races in as many weeks). Be aware that some of them were second-timers on the list and will not return next week (you may continue following them on your own, using them as you see fit).

Seconds:
Chariots Of Fire (17-1), Meadows; Guts N Glory (7-2), Maywood; Kentucky Freeze (4-5), Freehold; Yukons Luck (7-2), Buffalo; Kiawah (7-2), Fraser; Stamped By Design (3-1), Balmoral; Larry Horse (6-5), Cal Expo; Nicoleta (12-1), Cal Expo

Thirds
Lil Miss Snowflake (13-1), Meadows; Wes Mantooth (14-1), Maywood; Schooner Or Later (3-1), Buffalo; Allamerican Dice (14-1), Buffalo; Willow Gram (6-1), Balmoral; Sbd First Blood (13-1), Lebanon; Bo Knows Pow3er (35-1), Cal Expo

All adjustments for returnees to the list and additions will be in the Thursday blog.

News And Notes

The best news of the week in the harness world has to be the saving of Kawartha Downs, which was set to close its doors for good as the Canadian standardbred landscape continues to host a torrid new atmosphere.

The track moved from a privately owned racetrack to a not-for-profit operation and that saved live racing, according to Elmer Buchanan, a member of the horse racing transition panel. Shortly before midnight on March 29 a deal was struck to keep racing at the Fraserville, Ontario five-eighths mile oval. Due to the lateness of the agreement no dates are available for April but it is anticipated that the track will race 20 to 25 programs starting in early May.

Vernon Downs prepares for its 60th season of harness racing beginning Friday, April 12. Post time is 6:45 p.m. The schedule features 90 race days on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday schedule through Nov. 2.

A stakes schedule worth more than $2.3 million is planned for 2013, including the $700,000 Zweig Memorial Trots, usually featuring the season’s Hambletonian and “Oaks” characters. The End of Summer Showdown returns on Sept. 6 with a pair of $200,000 races for older trotters, the Credit Winner for the boys and the Muscle Hill for the girls.

It’s almost time for Dover Downs to turn over the action to Harrington. The raceway’s 67th year gets under way on April 21. Racing will be conducted Sunday through Thursday until June 9 when the remaining month’s schedule will be trimmed to four days weekly (Sunday through Wednesday). Racing will resume on a four-day schedule on Aug. 12 through Oct. 24.

Temple Of Doom (pictured below)  is back on the racetrack, this time with driver Andy Miller and trainer Julie Miller aboard. The trotter was sidelined nearly all of 2012 due to injury. After he won a qualifier over Arch Madness in on March 23 at the Meadowlands,  the six-year-old trotter’s first action since winning his only two starts of 2012, both at the Meadowlands last March, he won a B-2 trot as the dead-on favorite on March 29 in New Jersey.

Temple Of Doom has been in the stable of Julie Miller, Andy’s wife, since last year. “It’s hard to say how far he’s going to go,” Julie said, “but he’s done everything we’ve asked for coming back.” For his career, Temple Of Doom has won six of 36 races and earned $696,317 for owner Robert Rosenheim. At three, in the stable of Jonas Czernyson, Temple Of Doom set the world record for soph-colt trotters on a five-eighths-mile track by winning a division of the “Zweig” in 1:52.4 at Tioga. He earned checks in the Hambletonian, Canadian Trotting Classic, Colonial, Historic-Dickerson Cup and a division of the Stanley Dancer Memorial.

Although he had an unsuccessful turn in the breeding shed at four, Temple Of Doom won twice that season in the conditioned ranks before heading to the Miller stable in 2012. “I don’t think he’s staked to much this year,” Julie told USTA reporter Ken Weingartner, “but hopefully he can work his way through the conditions and up to the Open. Maybe he could be a free-for-all trotter.”

Look at the trotters looking at a 2013 campaign: Little Brown Fox and Guccio, returning at four the Jimmy Takter stable, won their qualifying races on March 30 at the Meadowlands. Little Brown Fox, who our readers cashed in on at three, won $940,000 last season. Guccio, less productive than his stablemate but pulling off some fine upsets for our readers last year, captured his second-straight qualifier this season for Takter. Guccio banked $748,000 last season.

Weekend Handicapping: The ‘Value’ Approach

Although I’ve often extolled the virtues of value betting as it relates to one’s ROI, there is another feature of the “value approach” that is equally important: frankly, it makes handicapping easier. This is especially true on days like Saturday, when big races like the Florida Derby, Dubai World Cup and Louisiana Derby reduce many handicappers to dart-throwingmonkeys… or babbling baboons.

By applying the concept of value to one’s selection process as well as to one’s betting, certain otherwise difficult decisions are practically made for the handicapper — without angst, teeth-grinding or (further) loss of hair.

Let me explain.

Suppose you think, as I do, that Revolutionary is the horse to beat in this weekend’s Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. The question we must ask ourselves is this: If this race were run 100 times (to keep it simple) how many times would the son of War Pass win? Obviously, the answer likely lies somewhere between one and 99, as zero represents no chance at all (a scenario that Mine That Bird proved to be false in the 2009 Kentucky Derby) and 100 signifies a foregone conclusion (as Big Brown proved was nonsense in the Belmont Stakes a year earlier).

Now I know that, for some of you, this is a hard notion to grasp. After all, the result is the result, right? Big Brown was not going to win the ’08 Belmont, just as Mine That Bird wasn’t going to lose the ’09 Derby — call it fate or destiny or pure chance, but what happened, happened.

Well, I suppose if everything stayed exactly the same in each re-running of the race this might be true. But how many times — in the real world — does everything remain exactly the same? Maybe the rail doesn’t open for Mine That Bird like he’s Moses parting the Red Sea; perhaps Big Brown is sent to the lead and relaxes for Kent Desormeaux… who knows?

Hence, the first step in the value wagering process is to assess a horse’s realistic chance of winning — and this is where the method lends itself nicely to handicapping. Personally, I think Revolutionary has about a 22-25 percent chance of capturing the Louisiana Derby this weekend; however, does anybody really think that the Todd Pletcher trainee will go to post at anything above 5-2, much less 3-1 or 7-2?

I sure don’t.

And given that, it is highly unlikely that I will be using the colt in any significant way on Saturday. Instead, I’ve got my eyes on a trio of horses that I think will show the opposite phenomenon — higher post-time odds than what I believe is fair. Before I reveal these super steeds, though, let’s take a look at the entire field, along with my fair odds for each entrant:

1-HIP FOUR SIXTYNINE (40-1)
2-PALACE MALICE (6-1)
3-REVOLUTIONARY (7-2)
4-GOLDEN SOUL (15-1)
5-WHISKEY BRAVO (30-1)
6-SUNBEAN (10-1)
7-DEPARTING (6-1)
8-CODE WEST (8-1)
9-PROUD STRIKE (15-1)
10-TITLETOWN FIVE (8-1)
11-MYLUTE (15-1)
12-BRAZILIAN COURT (40-1)
13-GROUND TRANSPORT (20-1)
14-NINA'S DRAGON (25-1)

While I like both REVOLUTIONARY and PALACE MALICE, I suspect the value in this race lies elsewhere. Although DEPARTING beat next-to-nothing in his latest start at Sam Houston (2.0 Key Race Rating), I’ve been impressed with:

A) The facile manner in which he’s won all three of his lifetime starts and the positive Pace Profiles he’s earned in each of those affairs.

B) His two consecutive zero late speed rations (LSRs) coupled with his competitive Brisnet speed figure last time (96).

I make DEPARTING 6-1 (he’s 8-1 on the morning line and will probably be higher come post time).

I also think that GOLDEN SOUL and TITLETOWN FIVE could offer value. The latter appears to be the likely pacesetter on Saturday (in part because noted “gate rider” Jon Court is in the saddle) and, despite the fact that he will be making his route debut this weekend, a repeat of his dominant wire-to-wire maiden win at Churchill Downs last year makes him a prime contender.

As for GOLDEN SOUL, well, he’s OK… and OK in a contentious field often means a higher-than-fair price.

Now let’s look at the Florida Derby from Gulfstream Park:

1-SHANGHAI BOBBY (3-1)
2-PICK OF THE LITTER (15-1)
3-ITSMYLUCKYDAY (3-1)
4-PONTIFF (50-1)
5-FRAC DADDY (8-1)
6-ORB (8-1)
7-INDY'S ILLUSION (12-1)
8-MERIT MAN (15-1)
9-ARE YOU KIDDING ME (20-1)
10-NARVAEZ (15-1)

Again, the fair odds help guide the final selection process. SHANGHAI BOBBY and ITSMYLUCKYDAY may be the horses to beat… but everybody and their brother knows it. To me, the value lies with FRAC DADDY, who grabbed a quarter and battled a throat ulcer while finishing a badly-beaten sixth behind “Bobby” and “Lucky” in the Holy Bull.

Still, it might pay — literally — to remember that the son of Scat Daddy was highly regarded in that Grade III event and also looked like the real deal as a juvenile. Obviously, he’s got some obstacles to overcome on Saturday, but that’s why FRAC DADDY will probably be 8-1 or 10-1 on the tote board, while SHANGHAI BOBBY and ITSMYLUCKYDAY will be vying for favoritism.

By the same token, I give INDY’S ILLUSION a puncher’s chance as well. I love the colt’s improving speed and pace figures and I suspect his odds will be through the roof.

Lastly, I didn’t personally look at the races from Dubai, but I ran my Win Factor Report (computerized fair odds line) on some selected races below:

TwinSpires.com VIP Betting Challenge Official Rules

Eligibility
This contest is open to all TwinSpires.com account holders in good standing with a TSC Elite VIP status of Bronze or above as of March 30, 2013.

TwinSpires.com account holders may achieve VIP Bronze status by wagering $25,000 in a calendar year.

How to Play

Any eligible player may enter the contest by placing a wager for exactly $100 to Win with his or her  TwinSpires.com account on the following races on March 30, 2013:

The Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park
The Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds

Eligible players who place a $100 Win wager on the Florida Derby and Louisiana Derby will be considered “contest players.”

Contest players may compete for prizes by recording the highest Return on Investment (ROI) from all wagers placed on Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds on Saturday, March 30.

Contest Scoring

Once a player has placed the required $100 Win bets on the Florida Derby and Louisiana Derby, ALL of his or her wagers placed on Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds on Saturday, March 30 will be considered entered in the contest.

For Gulfstream Park, only wagers on races 1-13 will count in the contest. Races 14-15 are simulcasts from Chile and will not be counted in the contest.

At the end of the day, all contests players will be ranked by their ROI on their combined wagers on Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds.

ROI is calculated by subtracting the total amount bet in contest wagers from winnings returned from contest wagers and dividing that sum by the total amount bet in contest wagers.

Each Player’s ROI is then expressed as a percentage. For example, if a player bets $200 and wins $400 from those wagers, his or her ROI is 100%. $400 in winnings less $200 wagered equals $200, divided by $200 = 1 or 100%.

Prizes
The top 3 finishers will earn the following prizes:

Grandstand box seats for the Kentucky Oaks on May 3, 2013
Grandstand box seats for the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2013

More March Mayhem

Pacing stalwarts continue their battles at Yonkers with the second leg of divisions for the George Morton Levy Series. The older male pacers go on Saturday, March 30, while the aged-pacing mares meet in leg two of the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series on Friday, March 29.

More harness information than anywhere else you can wager on the web includes TwinSpires’ exclusive harness horses to watch (H2W) list from tracks across the continent.

Of course the TwinSpires’ 10-percent bonuses for winning Pick 4s at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday nights and Woodbine on Saturday nights continue.

Check out the details for Woodbine here.

Check out the details for Buffalo here.

When we can get our hands on past performances in time to contribute we add our suggestions for Saturday’s Woodbine Pick-4. Check back later if that information is not printed below, as we have to add it after press time.

An added attraction, one that will expand as the weeks go on, is the Hambletonian Trail blog. We have brought back the exclusive information center based upon eligibles to the classic Hambletonian and “Oaks” as they head through stakes to get to the first weekend in August 2013. Bookmark the first entry, which presents this year’s probable players and sends you to lists of all the eligibles and check in often as the season ensues for great betting information that appears nowhere else based upon the soph-colts-and-filly trotters earning berths in the classics. It’s an exclusive series spinning off from this blog, brought to you by TwinSpires and the Hambletonian Society.

‘Levy’ Links

Saturday is set for the contests of “Levy” divisions at Yonkers Raceway. Five divisions were drawn for the 39 entrants in round two.

The first division has Clear Vision, the favorite, starting on the extreme outside. This opens possibilities for Rockincam. This is his first start of the year and he’s off of two good qualifiers in Florida; the problem is his health. Horses shipping in from Florida and coming to the cold air of the north tend to not ship well. We are hoping that he is fresh for his first start of the year.

Division two looks to be a wide-open affair. Forever Just, Electorfire, Little Michael B, Atochia and others all have a chance to win. Atochia draws the far outside, so it slightly opens up chances for the others. Forever Just and Electrofire may be the duo that benefits the most, though. Forever Just stalked the pace last week in his Levy split and flew up the passing lane to just miss victory by a neck. He’ll try to pull off the same move tonight to a slower tempo. Electrofire should also be near the top. He gets slight post relief this week and will make some sort of effort to get the lead late in the mile.

The third division looks to be all in the hands of Something For Doc. This speedy pacer took his division gate-to-wire last week. This horse is the likely favorite and there is no use trying to beat him.

The fourth division is an odd one. This division, yet again, has the favorites on the far outside, Versado and Annieswesterncard. This may allow horses on the inside to have a shot. Our selection, Bet On The Law, falls into that category. He stalked Something For Doc in his division last week and finished second by 5 lengths. He’ll try to stalk the lead again and he has speed to save for the final quarter if he gets the right trip.

The final division may be the toughest. Foiled Again, Razzle Dazzle and Code Word all draw in. We are taking our shot with Casimir Jitterbug again, though. He battled for the lead through a :27.1 quarter, backed into third at the half and kept pace from there to Code Word. He’ll try to sit mid-pack this week and have energy saved for the stretch drive and he’ll win if he’s good enough.

Matchmaker mares

Five divisions of preliminary two for the Blue Chip Matchmaker are slated for this Friday at Yonkers. Many from last week’s first round mares return with a few newcomers.

Division one is the weakest of the quintet. Eighthunrdollarbill is the likely favorite, finishing second to Ramona Disomma in her division last week. We are taking a shot again with Darena Hanover. She seemed like she needed a start last week, sitting off the pace and barely getting into the mile. In this weak field she’ll try to get away near the top and make a move around three-quarters for the lead and sprint from there.

Three contenders highlight division two, Rock N Soul, Handsoffmycookie and Anndrovette. Rock N Soul and Anndrovette both like the lead and have the posts to battle for it, so we are going to take a stalker, Handsoffmycookie. She stalked the pace last week and finished second to Feeling You. She should be adjusting well to the half-mile, as this is her second start on four turns.

Division three seems fairly weak but draws some top-class mares. Bettor B Lucky gets post relief and Hot List draws the center, but Royal Cee Cee N has it best this week. She failed to take the field gate-to-wire last week, letting Krispy Apple pace by her in the final 16th. She’ll want to be on the engine again most likely and should save herself for the final quarter of a mile by trying to rate on the lead.

The following division has speed up the wazoo [sic]. Camille, Unred Hanover and Mystical Diva are three speed demons that draw the three inside posts. This race sets up for a stalker in the likes of Keepers Destiny. She stalked the pace last week and pulled first over at three-quarters, settling for third to Camille. Though she draws the outside this week, she’ll try to get away in the middle of the pack to stalk the tempo and pull the same move she did last week, except she should emerge victorious.

The nightcap Matchmaker split is the hardest to handicap. It seems that Krispy Apple will be the favorite off of her huge mile last week, going first over for the entire mile and defeating Royal Cee Cee N. Two other division winners, Ramona Disomma and Feeling You, draw in here as well. Those two are our selections in the final division. Ramona Disomma was up against the weakest field last week and took the field gate-to-wire easily. She’ll try to go for the lead and be somewhere near the top for most of the mile.

Feeling You has had a history of drawing bad posts at Yonkers. This week, she draws post 7. She’ll have to get away from the back and get into contention early, catching some sort of cover and making a three-deep move late in the mile to attempt to catch which mare chooses to control the lead.

H2W Legend

As we publish weekly, here is the H2W legend,. Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track to decide how you will use the information.

Before the horses’ names is the track, followed on the next paragraph by a date it (or they) will be racing, with the race in which they are entered (R and race number). If a + is in front of a horse’s name, it means that horse is appearing on the list for the second (and last time) because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” means the horse is on the also-eligible list and needs a scratch to get into the race. Sometimes up to three horses are listed in the same race; it is up to you how to deal with the situation (note that in the past this situation has resulted in exacta and triples).

If a horse that has appeared on the list but was scratched or is not racing its second week consecutively, you will see a N/R after its name and will appear on a separate line from dated entries. If a horse shows up at another track in its second week of being listed, it will display the plus sign as indicated above. There is a margin of error, of course, so we encourage you to monitor our list to be sure our H2W is free of mistakes and you can take advantage of the entries.

Wagering on any of the H2W listed horses is based on your own judgment of value. Your handicapping skills should include decisions to wager to win, place, show or in exotics. If you have any questions about the H2W list, send them to us through the TwinSpires blog channel.
