At press time we are loathe to predict another onslaught of
weather that could affect the two tracks with features this week, so we are
reporting as if all things are equal. Last week Northlands Park in Edmonton,
Alberta, cancelled its two top features due to weather. We will cover them
again in this blog. This week we add the Cleveland Classic at Northfield Park
in Ohio.
As well, our lucrative horses-to-watch list (H2W) ensues as co-feature of the blog. The H2W has expanded and will start adding tracks to its docket as there are pending closures of a few venues on this week’s list.
Cleveland Courageous
We only have a six-horse field of soph-colt pacers to negotiate the Flying Turns at Northfield on Dec. 14 in the $126,000 Cleveland Classic. It isn’t much of a classic considering whose left of this division in the waning days of 2013’s soph crop. The fans will be all over Twilight Bonfire, who finally found the winner’s circle late in the season against very little talent.
Trainer Larry Remmen gave Word Power a rest after winning the Windy City Pace over Maywood’s half mile (we gave you that one) and has high hopes for him on the four turns in this event. We agree, especially if he doesn’t get the respect he deserves in the wagering. He could be a strong second choice; maybe a third choice if you trust the morning line. We like Apprentice Hanover to complete a healthy exacta, leaving “Twilight” and Dedi’s Dragon out of the first two finishers.
Return To The Northwest
The sophomore colt and filly pacers for the $75,000 Western Canada Pacing Derby (WCPD) and the $75,000 Northlands Filly Pace, respectively, try the big events a week later than scheduled at Northlands Park. The fillies go on Friday, Dec. 13 and the colts on Saturday Dec. 14. Here is a redux of last week’s analysis.
The big favorite in the first $12,500 elim the WCPD was Premium Attraction. He didn’t make the final; he busted at three-quarters during his major bid and was pulled up. The second choice in that field, Big N Bad, led from start to finish and won by 6 lengths. A 13-1 shot, Outlaw Falcon, took second. Brenin and American Venture were the other qualifiers.
The favorite in the second elim, Beren Hanover, got a perfect trip for area mainstay Keith Clark and won over Bettor In The Bank (18-1) and Tip Top Tap (7-2) . Also qualifying was Play Me Right (4-1).
In the final, the Clark horse should become a top choice, along with the first elim winner. They are, along with Play Me Right, the trio with all the speed, which usually gets all of the attention. However, speed either works well for a horse or burns the horse out, so we are looking beyond that trio.
Of the two elims, the only pacer to earn his way was Bettor In The Bank. He was slow to start, eighth by 7 lengths but he gained 3 lengths at that position, swung three wide to get fifth and made up enough ground to come within 1 ¼ lengths of Beren Hanover. “Bank” is one of three from the Clark barn but he didn’t race coupled with “Beren,” so he may be the contender with the best value. He is a major contender, though, regardless of how he is supported in the wagering.
On Friday, Dec. 13, the soph fillies go in the $75,000 Northlands Filly Pace (NFP) Final. Clark looms dangerously here, as well, sending out the obvious choice, Keep The Dream, along with the morning-line (ML) third choice, Contesta Hanover
”Contesa” won the first NFP elim with an easy trip, taking over at three-quarters and racing unchallenged to the wire. GT’s Selene, the final’s second choice on the ML, defeated Keep The Dream in the second elim. The true earner of a berth in this final, however, is Cenalta Fireworks. She could be an upset and pay well if she gets a smooth trip without a long, wide bid, as she did when making the final.
H2W Legend
Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last time) because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered but on the also-eligible list. Types of wagering on any of the H2W listed horses are based on your judgment. If you have any questions, email us at TwinSpires.
