  • August’s Curtain Falls With Crescendo On Labor Day Weekend

    POSTED Aug 27, 2014
August harness racing is about to reach a peak in its finale as the three-day weekend, which unofficially ends the summer season, arrives. The Labor Day holiday does not include harness action around the continent, with Canadian and American stakes events swarming through the daylight and nighttime hours.

No division is left un-raced, with an emphasis on the new candidates, as freshman colt pacers are featured in the Metro Pace and frosh fillies in the She’s A Great Lady finals at Mohawk. The divisions also contest lucrative Champlain and Simcoe stakes and “The Sweet Lou Show,” for the older pacers, is on the program, too—this week’s episode is titled the Canadian Pacing Derby Final.

Glamour boys and gals on the trotting side are featured at Vernon in “Zweig” splits and on the pacing side there is Labor Day’s traditional Cane Pace and those aren’t even all of the features. On the same program, Sebastian K takes on his usual and some new challengers in the six-digit Crawford Farms mile.

So load your TwinSpires account and charge your devices between meals, snacks and relaxation while picking and choosing your moves. Our suggestions follow here and on our exclusive blog, this year’s Breeders Crown Countdown, now on line. We link to it from this main blog for coverage of races through the rest of the season leading to the championship events in November, in cooperation with the Hambletonian Society and TwinSpires.

Check out TwinSpires-Hoosier Park’s 10-percent bonus for hitting Pick 4s every night there is racing at the Indiana track. And, of course, our horses-to-watch list (H2W) offers live contenders for win, place, show and exotics from tracks across the continent.

    The Metro Pace Final

The $667,000 Metro Pace Final for frosh-colt pacers has been upset territory over the years as well as some deserved public choices have taken the honors. We know this because our win record for this race over the last decade has included choosing both pay types.

On Aug. 30, the obvious may rule in Artspeak, a first-season colt that races like a veteran. As well, the streaking local, Go Daddy Go, who won the other elim last week, is sharp, though his connections know he must improve here to make a major impression. The contender with the most improvement who could shake “Daddy” from an obvious place finish and, with the help of a speed duel, create an upset shockwave, is Lone Survivor.

Trapped and shuffled and returning late with resilience, “Survivor” was as close to beating Daddy as Lyons Levi Lewis in the first elim. The two moves he made may have equaled a win if things went differently but in the final, chasing Artspeak will be the game and if the huge favorite is compromised at all on top, Survivor may indeed be the lone survivor of the field.

    She’s A Great Lady

The $480,000 She’s A Great Lady Final at Mohawk on “Metro” night will feature a sterling favorite and strong leader of this division in Jk Shesalady. Last week’s elim-topper was immaculate and far better than the other two elim winners’ efforts. She should romp again at odds that could eliminate show betting; she is that strong.

Solar Sister is an interesting exacta addition and should up the payoff. At 37-1 she had a far more stressful trip against “Jk” than place-finisher Divine Caroline (public’s second choice). The other exactor and triactor companion should be Shakai Hanover, a beaten favorite in her elim.

    The Sweet Lou Show

This week, Sweet Lou looks for his 11th-straight win against the toughest, albeit the same, group of older pacers that have followed him in his 10-race win skein as he leads the cast of the $634,000 Canadian Pacing Derby (CPD) on Aug. 30 at Mohawk. Missing this week is Captaintreacherous, whose connections scratched him from the CPD elim due to illness.

”Lou” has major foes in Bettors Edge and Foiled Again, both in this field, but only an unpredictable circumstance would find Lou behind them at the wire. All the others are rungs below Lou, including some of the local favorites that fans have been insisting can beat him. This, however, is not a hockey game, it’s the Sweet Lou Show and he is the best exotic key to come along in a long time. Stay with the program and use the two foes mentioned in criss-crosses for trifectas and in separate exactas, especially if the locals lean on any others.

Grand Circuit events at Mohawk for Friday and Satruday, for two-and three-year-olds, the Champlains and Simcoes, are covered this week at the Breeders Crown Countdown blog.

    Zig-‘Zwieg’-Zag

The colts for the $340,000 Zweig Memorial on Friday, Aug. 29 at Vernon Downs,  are familiar and talented and, for all due purposes, still led by the best—Father Patrick. Unless he scratches between our press time and Aug. 29 for health reasons that help explain his post-Hambletonian loss, there is still no one in this cast, including his stable mate Nuncio, that are better than him on their best day.

If his two successive losses cause his win-price offerings to increase, then there is no question he is the key for exotics as well as a win bet (it has been a while since being able to play him straight at prohibitive win odds. A good addition in combo tickets is Martiniwithmuscle. When on gait, this one knows how to float and is getting better as he and the season become older.

The $150,000 filly division of the Zweig is a bad race to give up on Shake It Cerry. Even if you feel Lifetime Pursuit has overcome her, that one is absent here and “Cerry” wins this by default. There may be some chances taken on members of this field by bettors but let’s face it, Cerry is tons better than these, including Heaven’s Door, who loomed more of a formidable foe last month than she does now. What we hope is that Broadway Socks, Avalicious and “Door” are the smokescreen that gives us another surprise price on the filly that continues to keep on giving to the bettor when it counts. You go girl.

    Oh ‘K’

Friday, Aug. 29 at Vernon Downs on the night of the Zweigs, the $236,000 Crawford Farms Open, matches super Sebastian K against Bee A Magician, Market Share, Mister Herbie, Archangel and five others.

The speedy Swedish Horse of the Year and top-rated horse in the sport this season, Sebastian K may actually offer a better, albeit low, price to win considering New York champ Archangel is here and loyalty is often measured in wagers. But Sebastian is all around better at racing, at least right now, and he has it all over the local and the mare, Bee A Magician. Hope for a price breaking $3 on Sebastian is slim but, as the saying goes, men have been killed for less/

    The Cane Pace

With two colts coming into the race per $35,000 supplemental fees, there are eight entries in the 2014 Cane Pace field on Sept. 1 at Tioga. For years this was a special event, it being the first jewel in the Pacing Triple Crown (a series with more than three events when you add eliminations). Although there is still a “crown” for winning it, the Little Brown Jug and the Messenger Stakes, there is little for any bettor to be concerned about along the way. Sadly, even the press value of the series has died.

However, alive and racing are some of the top soph-colt pacers of the season, including the industry’s anointed Hes Watching. The fast but opportunistic Hes Watching is one of three supplements. He meets major foe Jk Endofanera, the competitive Doo Wop Hanover, improving Lyonssomewhere (supplement), Stevensville (his first nemesis of the season), Luck Be Withyou (supplement), Bushwacker and Beat The Drum.

This could very well wind up to be like the North America Cup in a few ways which give Jk Endofanera an edge. The early-speed factor weighs heavily in this mile and Hes Watching may be over-confident after his recent efforts and ready to play his speed card. That will be his Waterloo, since Lyonssomewhere has the natural ability to fire early (though he has the burden of being short late). In the first-quarter you may also see Stevensville hustling for a front spot, as well as Beat The Drum will have a fancy to be up there.

The grinding colts with more than a few chances to take advantage of the speed scenario are Doo Wop Hanover and Jk Endofanera, the latter who did just that at 12-1 in the “Cup” with a similar configuration and some of the same horses. As well, “Jk” has once again fallen out of favor to Hes Watching and that is always good for his odds, making them far less than his chances. “Doo Wop” could be a perfect closing companion to complete a surprisingly healthy exacta.

    H2W Legend

Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last time) because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered on the also-eligible list. If a horse is listed twice, refer to the entries on the night of the race since a horse may enter in more than one race. Types of wagering on any of the H2W listed horses are based on your judgment. If you have any questions, email us at TwinSpires.

  • Cotolo’s Harness Review, News And Notes

    POSTED Aug 17, 2014
Our best move of the weekend was Friday, Aug. 15, at Northfield Park when our projected scenario came to life on the “Home of the Flying Turns” and the strong third public choice, All Bets Off, defeated the crowd’s big favorite, Mcwicked. All Best Off ($16.60, $2.40 ns) paced by the two burning out speed ¾ lengths before the wire and won. Mcwicked and Luck Be Withyou could not be separated for second and that dead heat killed the place price.

Another, bigger upset can not be placed on our watch. Datsyuk ruined Father Patrick’s revenge race at Tioga by beating him at 25-1. Father Patrick was trotting, though, unlike his gallop jaunt around the Meadowlands in the Hambletonian. He dueled early on the outside but that is little excuse for the powerhouse trotter to have been short a few steps at the wire.

Dancin Yankee was not an upset but he defeated our choice, Heston Blue Chip ($5.20, $2.90), in the Joe Gerrity Memorial at Saratoga. That exacta (Dancin Yankee was the overwhelming favorite) paid $16.80.

In the frosh stakes at Mohawk we were no better than second in two Nassagaweyas. We had Cowgirl Tough ($7.20, $2.10) with the favorite for an exacta worth $32.10, as well as Go Daddy Go ($3.70, $3.20) among the colt affairs.

Our choice from last week won the Gold Cup & Saucer but this week we went with the fifth-place finisher, Scott Rocks, due to win-mutuel offerings. We were second in the consolation with Mach Wheel ($2.50, $3 ok).

Our opening essay for this year’s Breeders Crown Countdown blog is now on line. We will be linking to it for coverage of races through the rest of the season leading to the championship events in November.

    News And Notes

Returning from an eight-month layoff after being treated for a knee fracture, I Luv The Nitelife, now four, finished fifth in a fillies-and-mares pacing event at Mohawk on Aug. 15. She was sent to the top by driver Jack Moiseyev and set quick fractions. After a 1:23.3 three-quarters 35-1 Hope For Paddy challenged her. That one passed “Nitelife” and held off a closing American In Paris (which finished second). Nitelife faded to finish behind four others in the seven-mare field (a $27,000 event).

The newest harness track, Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway, is set to open in October. The track operates in lieu of Raceway Park, the Toledo half-mile that closed last season when Penn National Gaming, Inc. purchased the facility and received permission to move the track so it is part of a new Ohio casino spread. The five-eighths oval has a ship-in barn for horses that will race Mondays and Wednesdays through Saturdays through Dec. 27 in 2014. In 2015, Dayton plans to open after Labor Day to race through the end of the year.

Yonkers Raceway has received approval from the New York State Gaming Commission to conduct a half-dozen Sunday matinee cards—from Nov. 9 through Dec. 14, inclusive—as part of a new wagering relationship with the French pari-mutuel agencies. The races are to be televised and wagered on through much of Europe. First post of these trotting-dominated programs is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET, with more information regarding field sizes and race distances as it becomes available. Six Sunday cards replace five Tuesday evenings (Nov. 11 through Dec. 9, inclusive) on the live schedule.

On the night of the Carl Milstein at Northfield, trainer Mark Headworth had three of his students racing in three different events on the card. In Race 3 his horse won and paid $12.40; in Race 12 his horse lost at 8-1; in Race 14 his horse won and paid $49.20. Keep Mark in mind as a trainer to watch. You won’t hear about him from the track publicists or handicappers because they are calculating top trainers by raw wins, not win percentages or win prices.

It was tough going for Illinois’ hottest harness fair in Springfield recently when a precautionary quarantine affected horses and the usual racing schedule was disrupted with cancellations. Thirty-three horses were isolated based on a horse having shared barn space at Balmoral with a horse showing symptoms of equine herpes virus. State officials took measures to prevent any possible spread of the equine herpes. While being tested, the opening programs of the harness meet were cancelled. Bad weather also contributed to nixing cards. When the horse in question was tested and the results were negative, Springfield continued its fair meet.

  • Mid-season Features Around The Ovals

    POSTED Aug 6, 2014
It’s the sport’s mid-season as we roll through August and though the Meadowlands’ season is done for now (returns in November), wild harness battles ensue and the star equines take to the road at the Grand Circuit tracks, aiming for Breeders Crown (BC) glory this fall. Our Countdown Breeders Crown blog will fire up next week and feature analysis of races for the divisions’ top horses on both gaits; races that have significant wagering value. (Photo on right by Ray Cotolo)

This week, aside from some high-profile names (most horses from the Hambletonian day stakes parade will be taking the week off), the action is local, per se. Hoosier Park is packed with Indiana Sires Stakes (INSS) for two- and three-year-olds on Friday and Saturday. We will cover the $75,000 finals. As well, the Dan Patch Invitational brings some strong ole pacers to the gate on Aug. 8.

Charlottetown Drivers Park launches trials for its premier event, the Gold Cup and Saucer. The final is on Aug. 16 (watch for analysis here next Friday).

More traditional Currer & Ives go postward at the Meadows over the weekend, also, and some familiar faces are at hand.

At Tioga on Aug. 10, glamour-boy pacing-colt rivals Hes Watching and Jk Endofanera battle in the Empire Breeders Championship and a filly version is also on hand.

Our horses-to-watch list (H2W) presents suggested contenders—valuable additions to your win, place and show bets and exotics through North America. See our weekly list of “lookouts” below.

Weekdays, check out the TwinSpires-Hoosier perks for players. Tuesdays, wager all you want and earn 10 TSC Elite Points per dollar bet. Click here for details. Patchwork Foes

The $250,000 Dan Patch Invitational reunites a few US Pacing Championship characters including the brilliant and dominant Sweet Lou and the only horse to defeat him this season, Dancin Yankee. This is their first meeting since May, when Sweet Lou finished third in the Van Rose at Pocono Downs.

Ron Burke, Sweet Lou’s trainer, told Ken Weingartner (USTA correspondent) that he is nervous because Dancin Yankee “is racing as well as any [horse] in the country … [he] is super sharp, career sharp, too.”
Dancin Yankee is on a six-race winning streak, though he has not consistently faced the caliber of foes that has “Lou.”

A field of nine is the cast of the event at Hoosier Park on Friday, Aug. 8. It’s the 21st installment of Hoosier’s signature event and it highlights the 14-race program complimented by INSS finals.

Others in the field are the familiar Bettor’s Edge, Heston Blue Chip, Thinking Out Loud and State Treasurer. Filling out the field are Night Pro (INSS champ), Carol’s Comet and Our Lucky Chip.

Though it makes sense to emphasize a threat to Lou, he has raced with immaculate precision that we witnessed in person at last week’s Hambletonian program. Watching him take command and rolling smoothly with driver Ron Pierce going along for the ride (no urging at all) was as amazing a performance as I have seen yet—and I have seen some of the greats.

Trust we are being objective, for we were not fans of Lou when he was anointed at three, and we were proven correct, as he failed to live up to the hype of his frosh antics. At four he was good here and there and we had him a few times at fair prices. But at five he is phenomenal, with a wondrous rhythm and marvelous muscle. Pocono’s three turns have stumped a few great horses here and there and Dancin Yankee had his day against Lou in May. It won’t happen this time; Sweet Lou may break every speed record Hoosier will ever record.

It’s exotic time in the betting department, then. Kick out the locals—they have no business in this against Lou and the rest—and be wary of Heston Blue Chip for second. He may offer some value for the exotics, even though he was magnificent last week on Hambo day. Linda Toscano’s New York-bred champ could nose Dancin Yankee for second and pump up an exacta price.

A $25,000 guaranteed Dan Patch superfecta pool will be available as part of the USTA Strategic Wagering Program. The wager will have a minimum bet of 10 cents and is available through the cooperative efforts of the USTA, Hoosier and the Indiana Standardbred Association. A $10,000 guaranteed Pick-3 is featured with races seven through nine

    Indiana-bred Battles Abound

The INSS frosh-filly trot leads the $75,000-each finals on the Aug. 8 program. Though she has post 9, Golden Big Stick is a prime example why her sire, Big Stick Lindy, is on the best average earnings list. She is fast and she is a great earner, the best in this field.

Next, INSS frosh-colt trotters hit the track. Two sons of Swan For All, a promising sire thus far, lead the pack. One of them, Airman Batten, should not be denied this championship.
Frosh-colt pacers are next on the INSS docket. Rockin Image colts make up half the field. His progeny has been prolific but Toni’s Affection, a son of Always A Virgin, appears to have a slight edge on the division.

Finally, the filly pacers take the stage and two Rockin Image fillies could take the top two spots, with a Panpacificflight gal in the triple. For Rockin Image, we have Heyhey Mahanah and Image Of Felicia. The other is Feetonthedashboard, who has the best win record of the season in the division.

Saturday, Aug. 9, the three-year-olds are in the INSS spotlight.

Soph-filly trotters begin the INSS quartet of finals, each worth $75,000. Streaking Andi’s Alana looks for her seventh win in a row and is bound to own the bulk of win pool. A threat just aside her is Hudson Jesse. She has been consistent and always in the mix this year.

Soph-filly pacers are next on the bill, with an evenly matched field of 10. Candy’s A Virgin may have a slight edge, with a strong bankroll from only seven races, almost half of them wins.

The INSS soph-colt trotters seem to be dominated by Double A Cash Hall, with the best earnings, good connections and five of his six starts victories. An outside threat could come from Sonnyforall, who is four for seven in the win column and raring to take on better to prove he is class material. He should be a price in the attempt, too.

Glamour-boy pacers from the program line up for the INSS and the card’s Satuday nightcap. The mighty Always B Miki is here and coming from his second to Hes Watching in the Meadowlands Pace he will be a prohibitive favorite and rightfully so. He is a good key here, among colts that are nowhere near his prowess.

    Trials By Jousting

A dozen pacers have been entered for the 2014 edition of the Gold Cup and Saucer at Charlottetown Driving Park. The field of 12 is the fastest field ever assembled. Of the horses entered into the two trials, eight have lifetime marks under 1:50.

Trial 1 will be raced this Saturday night, Aug. 9. Trainer Ron Burke aims to defend his title with the fastest and richest horse in the field, Aracashe Hanover. The Carl Jamieson-trained millionaire Up The Credit (2011 of the North America Cup winner) is the only entrant from last year’s final. Trainer Rene Allard has two entries in the first trial. Bigtown Hero is new to his stable. Island Jett is Allard’s other entry in Trial 1. Allard obtained “Jett” two starts ago and shows two consecutive miles in 1:53.3 over half-mile tracks. Astor is the only Maritime horse, also in Trial 1. Jason Hughes trains. Trainer Chris Oakes is new to the event. In Trial 1 he sends out Shock It To Em on Saturday.

Oakes’ other pacer goes in Trial 2 on Monday, Aug. 11. That one is Scott Rocks. Corey Johnson’s first entry in the event goes in the second trial. He is Wazzup Wazzup. Trainer Patrick Shepherd sends Duke Did It and Take It Back Terry is the second Burke starter. The third Allard entry is Mickey Hanover and the last entry is Mach Wheel for trainer Shane Arsenault.

“Aracache” will take all the money in Trial 1. Up The Credit will get action, even having post. The real danger, of course, is Bigtown Hero, who will be all out for his first appearance under the tutelage of Allard.

Trial 2 may be a better wagering event, with no star names on board. Mach Wheel could be the pace commander here, taking it from start to finish with his inherited Mach Three speed.

    Empire Breeders Strike Back

Soph pacers battle for a quarter-million dollars in purse monies at Tioga Downs on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 10. The finals of the Empire Breeders Classic (EBC) are the featured events on the sires stakes-filled card.

The filly final appears to be a match race between elimination winners Major Dancer and Precocious Beauty. Major Dancer won her elim after scratching lame from a sires stakes at Yonkers to follow it up with a workout the next day. She is a talented filly and should definitely not be discounted from the race.

Precocious Beauty has been in need of redemption. World champion at two, she pulled first over and managed to hold off Delightful Dragon to win her elim in 1:51.4. She is vulnerable, and will likely be involved in the early pace.

While Delightful Dragon was ½ -length shy of picking her post, the Three Diamonds winner has steadily regained her form. Second to speedy mare Clear View Hanover at the Meadowlands two starts back, she tackled her age group from post 7 at Yonkers to win from first over in 1:54.1. She draws a post that will likely put her in the center of the action, allowing her to take cover when needed and sweep by horses at a price.

In the colt final, the majority feels it will be an exhibition by He’s Watching. Winner of the Meadowlands Pace, he’s certainly speedy and can capitalize when given a trip. Over a sloppy track in his elim he was only ½ -length better than Jk Endofanera in 1:51.1 (note that he possibly interfered with Jk Endofanera but was cleared by the judges).

Even though he has lost to He’s Watching twice, Jk Endofanera will likely be given a cover trip, seeing as he cannot grind first over as was proven in the first-half-speedy “Pace” final. There will certainly be speed in the race, with Winds Of Change possessing agility but it will be Jk Endofanera’s redemption and he’ll likely be a great price since many jumped off his bandwagon, hopping into the fan group of He’s Watching.

    Picture Perfect

Fresh off of standardbred racing’s marquee event, the soph-trotting division returns to the stakes spotlight on Friday, Aug.8, at the Meadows, where two divisions of the $120,000 Currier & Ives are set to go.

With only six males in both splits, it is not surprising to see that these are two-horse races, so to speak. The opening division will be a match between Amped Up Hanover and Wheelsandthelegman. Amped Up Hanover won a division of the Townsend Ackerman (TA) on Hambletonian day, doing so on the front in 1:54.2. Wheelsandthelegman also raced in a split of the TA but faltered after a powerful shot to the top from the outside. Our preference is Wheelsandthelegman in this match-up, as his good draw and raw speed should put him in front at the finish.

The other division is between Il Sogno Dream and Skates N Plates, with Southwind Spirit playing the role of wild card. Il Sogno Dream was fourth in the Hambletonian, a classy effort but perhaps exaggerated. The Hambo was a fast mile, with third place being 11 lengths off the stretch-battling Trixton and Nuncio. Il Sogno Dream happened to be in the right place at the right time and closed into third but was soon passed by Harper Blue Chip, who also got a nice trip. With all this in mind, this division sets up to be a nice one to beat the chalk

Skates N Plates will obviously be the second choice, due to the lack of form in the field. His break in his last start can be ignored, since he has no other record of such blemish. He also won a division of the Arden Downs at the Meadows going wire to wire. At the right price, he can certainly upset

Southwind Spirit is the interesting entrant. Off since his third in the Valley Victory nine months ago at the Meadowlands, he has two qualifiers, with his first being on July of this year. He galloped through the stretch but went 1:57. Next out, he set easy fractions on the lead to finish in 1:55.3. Off a long layoff, he might need a start, but could make the exotics pay well.

Our overnight selections this week produced a winner at Charlottetown. Caliban Hanover won ($8.40, $3.90, $2.80). Our other Charlottetown choice, Isle Of Palms, finished sixth at 11-1. We failed at the Meadows in overnight action, with Broadway Speed finishing ninth at 35-1 and NF Jessica coming home fourth at 9-1.

Every Wednesday night, TwinSpires’ 10-percent-bonus Buffalo Raceway 50-cent Pick 4 wagers continue. News And Notes

Ron Pierce, veteran harness driver, discovered recently that he could butter his bread more thickly in New York than in New Jersey. When he scored a few times working at Yonkers last week, it was brought to his attention that he would make more money racing at Yonkers than at the Meadowlands. That was enough to make Ronnie change venues, admitting publicly that he needs to make more money. His decision did not sit well with Meadowlands-mogul Jeff Gural.

“Ron has had a distinguished career and I recognize that he’s at the tail end of a distinguished career and I guess he's trying to make as much money as possible,” said Gural, who added his disappointment. “You would think that there would be some degree of loyalty and appreciation for the fact I spent a hundred-million dollars to keep the Meadowlands open, which is probably one of the main reasons that we haven’t seen a catastrophic collapse of the industry.” Gural was talking to Bill Finley.

Pierce responded by saying “Mr. Gural has to understand that I have a mortgage on my house, car payments, insurance payments [and] I’ve got an ex-wife that I have to [pay] a large chunk of alimony … I have to do what’s best for myself … I am in a predicament where I have to make as much money as I can.”

Speaking of drivers, 52 days after receiving a new hip, popular driver Tim Tetrick got back in the sulky to win. It was Feb.6 at the Meadowlands. At 7-2, Tetrick scored a decisive victory for trainer Eric Mollor. “It feels good [to get the first win out of the way],” he said in a paddock interview with Justin Horowitz. “I’m definitely out of shape a little bit.”

Saturday, Feb. 8, Miami Valley Raceway opened for the first of more than 60 programs scheduled for the opening meet. It was a delayed opening night due to a power outage fifteen minutes into the debut evening of the harness track, the state’s racino replacement to Lebanon. Miami Valley offers live racing Wednesdays through Sundays until early May.

Followers of the TwinSpires harness blog are no strangers to Nuncio, 2013’s outstanding rookie trotting colt that was first supported here and which resulted in a few great exactas and the opinion that he was second best to top frosh trotter Father Patrick. As both of those classy colts enter their sophomore career, Father Patrick is getting Nuncio as a new stable mate. Nuncio is moving into the New Jersey barn of Jimmy Takter. Jim Oscarsson trained Nuncio for most of his rookie season before he moved back to his native Sweden and handed the colt over to Scott Andrews for the colt’s final three starts. In 10 starts last year Nuncio never finished worse than second with five wins and five seconds and $461,000 in earnings (we exploited his finishes as documented in our 2013 blogs. Now, both Hambletonian hopefuls are in the high-rent care of Takter.

The 2014 season at Vernon Downs will begin on Friday, April 11 and conclude with a stakes-laden card on Saturday, Nov. 1. The $200,000 (est.) Artiscape (mare pace), Muscle Hill (mare trot) and $200,000 (est.) Kindergarten Trotting Classic final have been scheduled for the closing night card as a logical springboard to the 2014 Breeders Crown at the Meadowlands. Friday, Aug. 29 Vernon offers the $700,000 (est.) Zweig Memorial soph trot and the new $200,000 (est.) Crawford Farms Open Trot.

Tioga will begin on Kentucky Derby Day (Saturday, May 3). Season highlights include the $200,000 (est.) Roll With Joe Open Pace on Sunday, June 1 and the $350,000 (est.) Cane Pace on Labour Day (Sept. 1).

    POSTED Aug 28, 2013

The Labor Day weekend in the United States is the traditional end of summer and special racing will ensue through Monday, Sept. 2, with stakes around the ovals and a focus on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Mohawk Raceway in Canada.

More live horses are projected in our exclusive horses to watch (H2W) list from tracks around North America.

TwinSpires offers special bonuses for Hoosier Park throughout the harness meet. Check out the Hoosier details here.

    Metromania

Saturday, Aug. 31, Mohawk presents the premier event for frosh colt pacers, The Metro Stakes. Once a million-dollar affair for the green group, it is now worth $683,000, still the most for the division at this point in the season. Three elim winners lead the final field though no colt threatens as Captaintreacherous did last year.

Arthur Blue Chip, Let’s Drink To It and Western Vintage will share favoritism as the elim winners. “Arthur” was our choice in the Nassagawaya the week before the elims ($17.20) and in his Metro elim ($4.20). He may be the rightful first choice here but could loom an overlay. As the crowd bets speed, it is difficult to know which of these colts can be faster than the other since their elim wins were a tick off of one another.

With all of the speed the three elim winners offer, we call your attention to the colt we liked last week at 3-1, Boomboom Ballykeel. He was second by a hair to Let’s Drink To It after that one took the lead from him. An outsider to consider is Luck Be Withyou, who put in a whopping second at 12-1; he could be the closer if the surface is unkind to the speed of the speed or a duel ensues.

The Metro Consolation could go to Somewhere In LA, another $17 colt we gave you in the Nassagaweya. But he didn’t make the final, presenting a dull elim mile. Look for him here to have a better chance and better odds.

    ‘Lady’-killers

The She’s A Great Lady Final pits two elim winners against some surprise foes, including our choice last week, Bahama Blue, who was second to Precocious Beauty at 74-1. The former will most likely be the public choice but watch out for Ali Blue, last week’s favorite that rode wide and just made the final, finishing fourth to longshot Beach Gal. “Ali” may be better off starting from the outside (post 9), just to the side of “Bahama.” With “Beauty,” these three could deliver the triactor.

Older pacers battle in the Canadian Pacing Derby Final, with action that involves a field of October-classic hopefuls so to see our analysis and work on your wagers, Go to Breeders Crown Countdown.

    Simcoe Stakes

Over $120,000 is on the line for glamour-boy trotters in the Simcoe Stakes splits. Fresh from Vernon and the “Zweig” wars, a couple of colts and a couple more from Hambo action take to the gate for round one at Mohawk on the big Saturday program.

We are ready to give High Bridge another shot. The price should be right, with Lindys Tru Grit the most likely favorite off his win at Vernon last week. Jimmy Takter’s fickle trotter was our Players’ Pool bet in the Hambo final and he disappointed greatly. But he returned to be second recently and could be the best here just on the company he has been keeping.

The second set of Simcoens [sic] may have to bow to Bluto and we cannot choose around him, even if his price is slim. The Jimmy Takter trotter has raced with the top tier and is a world better than the rest of these.

    Raising ‘Cane’

On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, Tioga presents the age-old classic, The Cane Pace. The biggest feature of this torn-down-stakes event (the years have not been kind to this once sterling member of the stakes calendar, with many great horses passing it for more lucrative miles) is Captaintreacherous. To host the greatest soph pacer to come along in more than a decade is a big plus for the feature.

The wagering could provide, once again, that strange contingent that has been anti-“Captain” from the season’s start. Why? Because for the first time this season Captain comes to a race off of a loss. It was a meager defeat but so many were waiting for it and now wager with unfounded confidence that the Captain has been demoted. He has not, of course, and if the wagers are spread out to make the Captain 4-5 or more, you will have the same bargain we offered you when he won the million-dollar races and paid over $4.

In fact, we can be bold enough to predict that Captain’s Cane mile will present enough room between he and the place horse to hold a Tyler Swift concert. Watch the odds, closely.

    Freshmen Prospects

On Friday, Aug. 30, Harrah’s Philadelphia hosts divisions of the Goshen Cup and Debutante stakes for two-year-olds. There are five of these Grand Circuit miles worth around $40,000 each on the program. Check the Philadelphia list on the H2W below for our suggested contenders. New York Sires Stakes soph-filly pacers for Yonkers’ program on Aug. 30 also appear as H2W members below.

    POSTED Aug 10, 2013

We came off of our championship weekend with some mild wins this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9 and Aug. 10.

At Hoosier on Friday, we gave you a pair of Indiana Sires Stakes winners. Rose Run Parker paid $6.60 in the frosh-colt trot. Bankers For All, though she finished fifth, returned $3.80 as she was coupled with the winner, Swan Yankee, in a frosh-filly trot. Our other colt trot choice scratched.

Over at the Meadows in state-bred action, Longwell was third to Bluto, a soph colt trotter we warned about, he being the Jimmy Takter horse that was left out of the Hambletonian box. High Bridge and Smoother Ride, in another sires-stakes mile, were second and third, respectively. And Lindy’s Tru Grit was second at 8-1, combining in an exacta with the favorite for a $12.20 exacta.

In Friday’s New York-bred action at Tioga, we gave you one winner in four events: Stay Up Late, paying $10.20.

Saturday’s first Gold Cup & Saucer trial went well for us. We gave you the winner, Escape The News, paying a generous $8.10 in a short field with three other higher-profile pacers.

That night at Pocono, we had only one second in three state-bred affairs. Handsoffmycupcake, at 4-1, combined with the race favorite for a $14 exacta.

Next week, in league with our Friday blog, the Hambletonian Society web site and TwinSpires support an exclusive blog: The Breeders Crown Countdown, which will follow major stakes races with serious “Crown” eligible contenders. We hope to prosper in the races leading to the elims and finals this October, where we will be on site at Pocono Downs for harness bettors through TwinSpires.

    H2W

There were 15 horses on this week’s H2W list. Two horses were scratched, one was on the also-eligible list and did not get in. Winners listed were from the previous H2W list that appeared prior to the special Hambletonian-program blog, which did not carry an H2W list.

    $17.40 Billied, Running Aces
    $9.80 Johnny Grippa, Saratoga

The following are the horses that finished second or third along with their post-time odds. Special notes on those finishes follow.

    Seconds:
    Stingy (2-1), Plainridge

    Thirds:
Eery Girls Desire (10-1), Batavia; Hidden Ability (2-1), Plainridge; Native Roots (1-1), Batavia

    News And Notes

September’s Little Brown Jug contenders for this year are topped by the obvious eligible, Captaintreacherous. However, there is still no official commitment for the colt to compete in the “Jug.” The classic event is one of the few elim-heat stakes left and, of course, it takes place on the four-turn mile at the Delaware State Fair. Certainly, Captaintreacherous has nothing to prove and would be expected to handle the half-mile and the heats without trouble but since his connections have not committed, pundits speculate that he will not show up due to the track’s size. As soon as we hear anything about the decision, we will publish it via this blog or Twitter @FrankCotolo.

Other high profile colts are expected to make the Jug a bit more exciting in 2013 than it has been in recent years. Should enough eligibles decide to drop in the box, ther could be three elim heats, setting up a dynamic final. Some of the other glamour-boy pacers that may go for the classic’s crown include Vegas Vacation, Lonewolf Currier, Odds On Equuleus, Rockin Amadeus and Johny Rock.

Harrington Raceway’s 67th year of live racing resumes Monday, Aug. 12 with a 13-race program. George Dennis maintains a slim lead over Ross Wolfenden in the driver standings. Joe Hundertpfund, Jr. is the top trainer to date and brothers Wayne Givens and Les Givens are close behind. Live racing will be conducted on a Monday through Thursday schedule through Oct. 24. The track’s signature event, the Bobby Quillen Memorial, will be held Sept. 9 (eliminations) and Sept. 16 (final).

A report from Pocono Downs indicates there is one trainer who has a couple of horses racing there that is being investigated following an abnormal blood test on one of his horses. Pocono officials would not identify the trainer and insisted it was not a big deal. For a local story, click here.

Sometimes is seems so simple to drive in a harness race. We see so many races without incident that we neglect to realize the danger facing all of the humans and animals. Last week at Saratoga Harness, the ninth race turned into an unfortunate reminder of the hazards the sport presents when a horrific spill scattered the entire field but for the leader and injured many of the drivers. Witness a race gone wrong to remind yourself that harness racing is no walk around a racetrack. Click here for video.

  • Sizzling Stakes Ensue

    POSTED Aug 7, 2013

There may be a breather for some horses, most of which participated in last weeks barrage of Meadowlands stakes on Hambletonian day, but there is a herd of others, trotters and pacers, two- and three-year-olds, battling for state-bred stakes money in Pennsylvania, New York and Indiana.

Also on the docket, the famous Gold Cup & Saucer primes participants this week with trials for Charlottetown Driving Park’s biggest event, which presents its 54th edition on Aug. 17.

More winners are projected as our exclusive harness horses to watch (H2W) list from tracks around North America returns.

TwinSpires offers special bonuses for Hoosier Park throughout the harness meet. Check out the Hoosier details here.

    Hoosier Harangues

Four Indiana Sires Stakes Gold Level events are on the menu at Hoosier Park this Friday, Aug. 9. Frosh and soph affairs are worth $30,000 each.

In round one, a two-year-old filly trot, the probable choice is Earls Dixie Darling. The winner of six races in nine starts hasn’t just won more races than all the members of this field combined, she has also won far more money than them. Her only burden could be post 10. Getting the rail advantage is Banker’s For All, who should be one of the other two top choices and perhaps an overlay due to the post advantage. Along with Jesse’s Gift, an unproven filly going for only the second time in her career and who is a product of productive-sire Jailhouse Jesse, these three could make up a well-priced trifecta.

The second group of filly trotters features another 10-hole special in the undefeated Andi’s Alana. However, starting nearest to the rail is ER Sweetheart, who could be a bargain. She has been a factor in seven of her eight starts and may get a few steps ahead of the 10-hole favorite.

Meadowbrook Mike gets our support in the first colt split. He’s one for one and there is no reason why he can’t make it two for two against this group, which includes Joe Tucky, a winner of six of eight. But “Joe” hasn’t beaten much and “Mike” has shown a propensity for beating speedier types.

In the last colt episode, we could make a case for a few but the Ron Burke trained Rose Run Parker has faced better company in his short career than most of these. At face value, the crowd should go for Teddy Bear as the speediest but that will not be such a strong factor here.

    Pennsylvania-breds

Continuing on Friday, the state-bred action includes the $237,045 Pennsylvania Sires Stakes (PASS) at the Meadows for glamour-boy trotters. Division one appears to be a wide-open affair but Midwest native Longwell has shown superb consistency recently (we chose him July 13 when he won the “Connors” in Michigan as a Hambo-eligible). He makes his first start off of a sick scratch and should have no problem returning to his winning stride.

High Bridge slides down the condition ladder in division two, making his first start off a seventh-place effort in the Hambletonian. Showing improvement in this field is Smoother Ride, although he doesn’t have the class of the Jimmy Takter-trainee. The colt just needed a good draw to be considered into contention, with post 2 he qualifies for victory, seeing that he seems to prefer stalking the pace rather than closing on it.

Valley Of Sin and Possessed Fashion are the eye-catchers of the finale of the PASS trio. Lindy’s Tru Grit has been showing improvement against this group and debatably draws into the weakest division. With a good draw, he can sit back and pounce on the leader come the end of the mile.

    Tioga Tigers

Tioga Downs hosts the $107,360 New York Sires Stakes (NYSS) for frosh colt pacers, with four divisions to be held on the Aug. 9 program.

Division one is our shot to use a first-time starter who appears to have rounded into form and may be dangerous on a three-turn oval. Ron Burke’s Double Your Bet will likely be ignored for his lack of racing experience. With his last qualifier five days ago, he should be fresh Friday night. A longshot to key in exotics is Hands Off Frank, who is questionable stepping up in class but as been a major contender in the Excelsior Series.

Design Guru and Thereisapaceforus will share favoritism in the second division. The family duo of Pat and Mike Lachance team up on Sir Sam’s Z Tam as he makes his second start. He showed prominence in his qualifiers at the Meadowlands but his talent seemed un-justified in the slop at Monticello on Aug. 1. He’ll be a price come post time and should give us a good mile.

“Sheppard” winner Forty Five Red will be an incredible underlay in division three. Stay Up Late is beginning to get himself together after a mediocre draw in his debut put him far off the pace, ending up fourth. Heading to Monticello, he got away far off the leader, flying past horses to get nosed at the wire in 1:58.1. In his third start, he should be ready for victory.

Wagering in the final division will likely be scattered between the eight entrants. Coming into this mile is Twin B Speedo, appearing to be ins top form. He has shown he is not one-dimensional, racing on the lead and off the pace in his first four starts. He took a liking to the Meadowlands surface and should prefer the Tioga oval.

    Saturday Sophomores

Closing out sires stakes action is Pocono Downs on Saturday, featuring the $234,672 PASS for sophomore mare pacers.

For her class and resume, Charisma Hanover is more than likely to be the favorite in division one. Coming off of a layoff is Mattie Terror Girl, who was surprisingly good against the top of her age group in the James Lynch Memorial back in June. She is coming off an effortless qualifier at the Meadowlands on July 27, winning in 1:54.2. She is fresh coming into this event, drawing the rail and appearing to be a menace.

Novascotia Hanover headlines the second division off of a second-place effort in the Adioo Volo on Adios day at the Meadows. Beginning to turn around is Handsoffmycupcake, who showed no improvement against this group early on but is now coming off an impressive first-over mile in the Adioo Volo. She displayed power and endurance in that start. She’ll need the right trip to dazzle on the clay oval in the Pocono Mountains.

Somwherovrarainbow and Nikki Beach will be overwhelming favorites, with both coming off victories in the Adioo Volo. Canary Island is a filly that starts from the rail in this field; she has also been getting stronger as months passed. Her most recent appearance in the PASS was on July 20, closing and finishing third in 1:52. She is coming off a “refresher” mile at Harrah’s Philadelphia and will be peaking in her second start off a short layoff.

    Gold Cup & Saucer

There are three Gold Cup & Saucer trials leading to up the 54th running of the final, which will take place Saturday, Aug.17 at Charlottetown Driving Park. Twenty-one horses have being nominated, setting the stage for trials on Saturday, Aug. 10, Sunday, Aug. 11 and Monday, Aug.12.

At press time we only have the Aug. 10 past performances, so here is our analysis of the first trial (we will cover the final in next Friday’s blog).

Now five, Up The Credit seeks a minor stakes reward after a rocky career following his best achievements at three. He is much the class in this seven-horse field of older pacers but there may be reason to feel he can be defeated as a major underlay here. He will share favoritism with State Treasurer, who gets the rail, but value may settle in a third contender, Ron Burke’s Escape The News. Look for a marked improvement as the Artiscape gelding steps down to a class that may be easier for him to handle than the aforementioned.

Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track to decide how you will use the information. The list has shortened as the stakes season ensues but still offers the best possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races.

The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means that horse is appearing on the list for the second (and last time) because it failed to win the first time it appeared.

An “ae” signals the horse is entered but on the also-eligible list (so it might not get into the race). Multi-horses may be listed in the same race.  Horses from previous lists that are not racing this week will no longer appear until they are confirmed in a race.

Wagering on any of the H2W listed horses is based on your own judgment. Your handicapping skills should include decisions to wager to win, place, show or in exotics. If you have any questions about the H2W list, send them to us through the TwinSpires blog channel.

  • Meadowlands Pace tops miles of harness weekend action

    POSTED Jul 10, 2013

Captaintreacherous, rested and reportedly in fine fettle, is the star of the sport’s first million-dollar race, this year worth $635,750, The Meadowlands Pace. He is the morning-line favorite and it would still be generous to get those odds on him.

Also at the Meadowlands is the William Haughton Memorial final, New Jersey Sires Stakes finals, the Mistletoe Shalee and The soph-colt-and-filly trotting events—the Stanley Dancer and Del Miller memorials—we cover on the Hambletonian Trail at the exclusive blog.

Our exclusive harness horses to watch (H2W) list from tracks around North America continues with a few extra additions this week, when so many tracks are filled with overnight racing bargains.

TwinSpires offers special bonuses for Hoosier Park throughout the harness meet. Check out the Hoosier details here.

    The Pace Of Paces

Captaintreacherous, the defending Pacer of the Year, is coming off of a hellish-mile in the Max Hempt Final, where regardless of the grind in the slop from the outside he emerged victorious.

The “Captain” is without debate the one to beat in this field, as he will be in any field with his division until he proves vulnerable.

Adding into the mix of this race are impressive miles by Sunshine Beach and Odds On Equuleus in the elimination last week. This opens up the race but not greatly. Adding all the variables into the race, Captaintreacherous is still the best in this field. He may not be the kind of value he has offered over the past two months, even though there are still “dragon-slayers” promoting the vengeance of foes he has already beat handily. The Captain is ready for some home cooking, so to speak.

This won’t be a high payoff year for the pace on any level of wagering but it will be a great race to watch. After all, it is getting so any race involving Captaintreacherous is a great race to watch. As well, he has turned into a monstrous exotic key horse.

    Mistletoe Shalee

Over the last three years the Mistletoe Shalee has been known for its upsets, with the leader of the division coming short towards the mile’s end. Last year, American Jewel lost to 10-1 Major Look. Before that, Drop The Ball paid a healthy $12.40 and Put On A Show was greatly disappointing in the 2010 edition, finishing fifth to 9-1 Dancinwiththestarz.

We will use the recent history of this race hopefully to our advantage with I Luv The Nitelife likely to be the heavy favorite. But she has weaknesses. For example, look back to the final of the New Jersey Sires Stakes. The leader of that race set the pace and I Luv The Nitelife had to go first over through fast fractions to make her move, resulting in a third-place finish. There is one horse in this field that comes in mind when thinking of upset potential, Jerseylicious.

Last year, Jerseylicious got a perfect trip to pull off a 9-1 upset in the Sweetheart final at the Meadowlands. She beat I Luv The Nitelife in the sires stakes final and is coming off of two good efforts in the James Lynch. She’ll be closer to the pace instead of getting away towards the rear, as what happened in the “Lynch” final, and should get cover to follow until the stretch, where she’ll have open road for the upset.

    ‘Sweet’ Field

The older pacers of the William R. Haughton Memorial (WHM) are back for the July 13 final. We nailed the big price last week in the elims with Sweet Lou and we also warned you about a return to good form for Golden Receiver. He did return with vengeance, finishing second to Warrawee Needy’s giant elim mile (1:46.4). “Golden” was 16-1 and with the favorite offered an exacta worth $65.20).

When he stopped the timer in 1:46.4, Warrawee Needy was instantly stamped as the one to beat in the final. He and Golden Receiver are likely be bet the heaviest, since Golden Receiver dug in well to Warrawee Needy’s pressure. It appears that the other elimination winner, Sweet Lou, might provide us again with some value in the win column.

Sweet Lou gets a better post this week, which will help him greatly after winning from post 9 through slow fractions in his elimination. His post will allow him to get away near the top, which means he won’t have to close much ground. He has shown he is capable of racing from the middle, closing to win the Meadowlands Maturity and coming from fifth to finish second with a horrible trip in a Free For All (FFA) event at the Meadowlands. If he is above 4-1, then the value indeed exists.

Also keep your eyes on Up The Credit. He isn’t a definite bet in the exotics but he has been showing great improvement against the FFA gang and has also done better from off the pace. His post will allow him to close and he can close well. If you’re out for a kill, he is one to key into exotics.

    State-bred Finals

The New Jersey Sires Stakes (NJSS) finals for freshmen offer a quartet of miles for the youngsters on both gaits for $150,000 each.

First on the docket is the frosh-filly trot final. Southwind Confetti broke after a big move last week, one that may have seen the light of the winner’s circle. We will go with her this time around. In the colt trot, Muscle Midas went a long way at 90-1 for third in his first trip to the Meadowlands and he could find coming from behind a plus at a big price here where the favorites are much too obvious.

The colt pace is next and all eyes (plus most dollars) are on Western Vintage. But we like the improving Sweet Rock, who was right behind that one last week and could find post 8 a better path to victory if he is driven with a plan, which could be the case with John Campbell aboard looking to pull off one of his second-over victories in deep stretch. In the filly pace we will once again support Danielles All Aces, looking for a clean-gaited performance which puts her deeply in the mix.
